A Need for User-Friendly Collection Agencies

by Bertha Jackson
(New Jersey)

When you think about Collection Agencies, pictures of a bright sunny day is not what comes to mind. It is more like walking down a dark street and knowing that someone dangerous is walking behind you.

Just the thought of having to deal with individuals that work for them, raises the blood pressure. Unfortunate times will fall on everyone at some point, but what makes it even harder to deal with, is the harsh way that some collection agencies handle collecting debts.

Some people do not even answer their phones in fear of having to be subjected to being talked down to by the collection agency staff. Much of the time, you will deal with individuals that have very intimidating voice tones. They will use harsh tones to scare you into making some type of payment arrangement with them.

It makes you mad when you realize the cruel methods that some of the companies use to force people to pay. It would be nice if more collection agencies would be user-friendly. Having to deal with debt is stressful enough. Most people will be more apt to pay or make payment arrangements if they are not made to feel worthless by collectors that are possibly in debt themselves.

Your opinion is exactly right on many levels. I have worked in collections for about 15 years, and I have always felt that there was a need for 'User-Friendly Collection Agencies', as you put it. Which is perfectly titled.

A few years ago, with this matter in mind, I decided to own and operate a collection agency. I have had good success and believe it or not, many of the debtors thank me after they have paid off their bills, and even have sent thank you cards. I have even had debtors tell other creditors they owe, that they will pay if they hire my company to collect. Hard to believe, but true.

I have been sent to collections twice myself; after a divorce and loosing a job. I will be the first to say that the nasty collectors got nothing, until they jumped through all the hoops. And the collectors that showed some understanding, got all I could give and as fast as I could pay it off.

I have also noticed that most collection agencies only want to hire people with perfect credit. My opinion; 'Big Mistake'! I go with the old childhood saying, 'It takes one to know one...'. This meaning, it takes a person that knows the feeling of financial problems, to understand another person going through the same thing.

I don't hesitate to tell a debtor that I understand completely because I have been there and may be able to help from what I have learned. This is also why I only hire people that have experienced financial hardships themselves. By doing this, we are still in business and proud to say have never had a complaint filed against us.

Though I honestly do feel badly for the debtors that have to deal with the agencies that don't practice understanding and basic human sympathy, it allows my company and reputation to get stronger.

Another point that I stress to my employees; If it weren't for the debtors, we would not have a job. So, therefore, they must be treated with respect and given the best customer service possible. This also looks good on our Clients, as they aren't leery of sending past due accounts to us, in fear of getting a bad reputation for hiring an abusive collection agency.

I have read most all of the opinions, and yours really hit home for me. I am happy to have come across it and hope debtors out there know that there are collectors that do care. Maybe if debtors have dealt with a caring collection agency, they could tell their other creditors to consider using their services, and they will consider making a good effort to pay their past due bill. Creditors do listen when it comes to getting paid.

Again, thank you for voicing your opinion.
