Collection Scams:
How To Protect Your Rights Under
The Fair Debt Collection Act

While most debt collection agencies operate ethically and within the law, debt collection scams are on the rise, and you need to be aware of some of their tactics.

If you are considering third party collection agencies to recover delinquencies for your business, make sure they operate within The Fair Debt Collection Act guidelines, and that they have a clear track record of handling customers in a respectful, ethical manner.

Failing to do so could expose you to possible litigation from a debtor accusing an agency of abusive, harassment, or other practices outside the law.

Harassment can include using verbally abusive and obscene language, threatening violence, or using other demeaning type behavior.

Some common industry scams include IRS impersonation, where scam artists mislead taxpayers who owe back taxes into divulging personal and banking information via IRS "lookalike" websites.

It should be known that the IRS never asks people to to reveal passwords, PIN numbers, credit card, banking or other financial information.

Learn more about debt collection fraud, more scams, unfair practices, old debt collection., and how to handle a debt collection dispute; also what to do when you receive a debt collection notice.

Protect yourself and your business from collection fraud.
