Improve Your Hospital Debt Collection Tactics in Today's Economy

Hospital debt collection is getting a bit of a face lift in today's challenging and tough economic market. Rising unemployment, consumer debt, and the increase in home foreclosures, is putting greater strains on medical care providers.

Another major contributing factor is the millions of uninsured Americans, along with patients' increasing financial burden for care, as more employers shift the costs for healthcare to their workers. These high deductible plans are becoming more popular with employers to help lower the costs for insuring employees.

All these indicators mean that more patients are carrying larger and greater responsibilities for healthcare bills. This also means more hospital debt as these bills go unpaid, and consumers find it harder to makes ends meet.

A Delicate Balance

Hospitals are confronted with balancing their mission to serve the needs of their communities without creating ill feelings, but also find better approaches to debt collection.

Many are implementing programs to better work with their patients to pay off this bad debt. Programs like financial counseling to patients, as well as patient-friendly internal collections training processes are examples being used.

The goal is to address the hospital's debt collection concerns, while operating in a spirit of compassion and empathy.

A recent Associated Press report cites the nationwide growth of medical and hospital debt, as many more become uninsured and do not have enough insurance to pay hospital bills.

Debt Scoring

Newer technologies, such as debt scoring are also being used in some facilities. These can assess and evaluate a patient's likelihood, and even capacity to pay. Read more about debt scoring and how it can help you quickly identify problem patient accounts before they escalate.

This has raised concerns with some consumer groups who fear these tools can be used to deny care to patients.

Hospitals and medical facilities will have to find the balance between serving and maintaining the goodwill of their communities, while using these technologies that better enable them to lower hospital debt.
