Medical Billing Collections: Chiropractors Are Becoming Collectors

A recent visit to a chiropractor revealed just how deep debt can go for chiropractors.
He shall remain nameless to protect both his privacy and his business.
"I am a millionaire... Only, it's debt that I'm owed." He owns an office and has staff on hand, but he isn't getting paid by a quarter of the people he treats.
One patient flatly told him that he wouldn't pay the $5,000 or so he owes. The chiropractor has been trying for over a year to collect the debt. Other people have sent in $5 here or there. The recession and bad economy isn't making things any easier. He has considered hiring a staff person dedicated to collections.
Right now, medical collections cases have skyrocketed, and it seems that the situation is only getting worse.
Here are four prevention techniques:
1. Use 3rd party collection agencies- you may have to give up a 3rd of the amount, or raise fees to match, but you'll get paid immediately.
2. Verify insurance up front - have staff call in and verify eligibility to receive insurance payments. Beware of the client who receives the money himself from insurance - he or she make take the money and walk, leaving you nothing.
3. When in doubt, ask for complete pre-payment - this will save you time and money, and you can refund or credit the client with any payments you receive from 3rd parties such as insurance companies.
4. Listen - if the client brags or discloses other debts, be warned. Pay attention to your intuition, and be alert - "all hat and no cattle" applies to some patients, and they may never pay you. Develop a payment plan and stick to it if you can legally do so.
By being alert and paying attention to details, you can avoid being the poor "millionaire."
