Due to my previous experience with medical debt I was very interested to read the article on consumer rights when dealing with debt collectors.
This article is informative and states clearly that it is a debt collector's job to get the monies owed to them back. This is very different than harassing the consumer, and the difference is well spelled out here. This article very concisely explained the Federal regulations that protect the consumer and gives a helpful overview of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
It is very good to know that debt collectors can not use deceptive or otherwise unfair means to coerce the debt to be repaid. The information that you can stop debt collectors from calling while you are at work, or can inform them that you do not wish to have contact with them outside of learning of actions that they can take against you is very helpful, and will help in future decision making when speaking with debt collectors.
While I fully understand that any debt will need to be repaid, and expect that when I take out a loan I will be repaying that within a reasonable time, there are times, such as medical emergencies, where this is not possible and some sort of agreement will need to be made. With this information I feel I will be able to protect myself while repaying my debt.
